History
1909
Bandarawela was a small hamlet. It was
surrounded with tea plantation of green tea bushes, The population was
very low. The Rev. Christian brother put up a foundation to a trilingual
school to introduce the importance of education to the people of
bandarawela.
1928
In the mid period of 1928, this school
was handed over to the Rev. Brothers of Mary Stella of negambo. Rev. Br.
Louis talk the responsibilities of this school and named the school as
‘St. Joseph . In this period all the Sinhala students were sent to the
nearly school “Seevali”. the students those who promoted to grade 3 and
alcove were separated to study in English medium. the following meeting
appointed . The rest of the primary students (16) and the English medium
students in Tamil by a trained teacher Mr. Savarimuthu, Sinhala by Mr.
Yotes and English by Mr. Solomon. As Mr. Ponnambalm Varithambey was
appointed to fill up with the vacancy.
1932
The students who were promoted to Gr.3
were not sent to other schools, and continued their studies in this
school likely. In tells 1932 this school was registered as an English
Medium Boys School. Rt. Rev. Mother Mary Solange built a small building
and a cave for virgin Mary to educate the poor al the dough the
plantation children and handed over the school to rev. Sr. Mary Solange
Miranda of Thoothukudi (India)
1931
The leader of the Assembly of St. Xavior,
Negamlso Rt. Rev. Mother Mary Solange bought an old bungalow close to
this school to Co-Sisters as a holiday home. (Nazareth Convent). Rt.
Rev. Mother Mary had put path to success of this school by building the
first building on a hill top.
1933
On January 1st of 1933 this school was registered as St. Joseph Mixed School.
1934
This school was handed over to a trained
teacher Rev. Sr. Mary Gaiten after Rev. Sr. Selvadorai Miranda. Rev. Sr.
Mary Gaiten assured hea aluties in an administrated wary till 1944(10
years)
1936
This school was registered as St. Mary’s Mixed School, The present Main Hall was built in this period. (no of sits 150)
1944-1950
Rev. Mother , Mary Bealsasa (1945), Mary
Joseph(1945), Mary Michael were the principals closing this period. No
of sts 200. (1950 – No.of sts. 380 trs. 9)
1951
On January 1st Rev. Sr.
Alexandra was appointed as a principal. Mr. Ponnambalm Varithambey was
the deputy principal who gave this fullest support to the principal.
1954
As the establishment of a Muslim school. Muslim students were sent to that (Razik Fareed) school.
1955
No. of sisters- 508, teachers-14
1956
The increase in the number of sisters,
the school was set into two sessions. Morning session was set under the
Principal Rev. Sr. Alexandra control (head) and the evening session was
presided by the Deputy Principal Mr. Ponnambalm Varithambey.
1963
In 1963 this school was takes over by the Government Registered as Government School.
1965
As the retirement of Rev. Sr. Alexandra
Deputy Principal Mr. Ponnambalm Varithambey was appointed as the
Principal. He constructed a building with the help of the parents and
the govt. At present this building is called as Varithambey Hall. He was
retired from this (40 years) seaurices to this school in 1966 september
. (In 1966 No of sisters -1280, teachers – 40)
1968
This school was reached the standard as Maha Vidyalaya.
1971
Mr. M. Peaumed was appointed as principal.
1974
On 6th Dec 1974 this school was named as ‘Bandarawela Tamil maha Vidyalaya.
1979
The tamil students of “Little Flower
Convent ” was joined in this school as the direction of the Education
Department. Mr. S. Thiruchandusan became Principal after the retirement
of Mr. . M. Peaumed.
1980
First Prize Giving was held in this year.
1983 – 1987
This was the golden era of our school.
Mr S.Thiruchenduran was the Principal during this period. Mr. T.
Dharmalingam continued his service as a vice principal and then as a
principal in 1987. The Tamil unit of St. Josephs’ college was
amalgamated to this school.
1987 – 1989
Mr. N. Nagaratnam served as a Principal during this year.
1989 – 1999
In this year Mr. V.T. Jebadurai was
appointed as a principal. Through his strenuous effort this school was
upgraded to Central College in the year 1993. In the years 1997 / 1998
“Sri Sithi Vinayagar” temple was constructed at the college premises.
Mr. V.T. Jebadurai successfully served at this school for eleven years.
Our present principal Mr. V. Karunakaran too served as a Deputy
Principal during this period.
2000 – 2003
Mr. S. Karuppiah served as a principal for a short period. In
2002
the Bilingual Unit was commenced for Grade six students.
2003 – Up-to-date
Mr. V. Karunakaran was appointed to this school as a principal on 11th
June, 2003. During this period, the total number of students of this
school increased up to 1400. Considerable improvement was shown in the
Grade 5 scholarship results. It is proud to note that our G.C.E (O/L)
students’ results too have an increase for the last few years. The
Ordinary level students obtained high results to step into Advanced
Level in Math, Science, Commerce and Arts streams. During his tenure
many graduates were produced and are employed. in both private and
Government sectors. There are also undergraduates at present in the
universities of Sri-Lanka and India.The
Bilingual Unit of this college has shown a remarkable achievement by
obtaining high results from the year 2007. Sports and other co
curricular activities are successfully conducted at present. Mr. V.
Karunakaran was achieved the Best Principal “Guru Pratheeba Praba award
recently by the the President of Sri Lanka. The Principal and the
staff of this college aspire to have great achievement in the future as
well.
